Johannesburg - The South African Police Service is edging towards its goal of 193 240 officers by 2010.
Altogether 4 889 new members completed their first level of training this week, SAPS divisional commissioner for training Gary Kruser said on Friday.
The course included handling of firearms, street survival, crime detection and prevention, and investigation and intelligence gathering.
The trainees would be placed at police stations around the country once they had completed a further six months training, Kruser said.
Deputy National Commissioner Mala Singh urged the trainees during their passing out parade in Pretoria, not to tolerate the callousness and scant regard for life displayed by criminals.
