Johannesburg - The former military psychiatrist at 1 Military Hospital has begun serving a jail sentence in Canada for sexually harassing his patients, Beeld reported on Thursday.

Dr Aubrey Levin, 74, was sentenced to five years in jail and reported to correctional services in Calgary over the weekend.

His lawyers are still trying to have his sentenced reduced. He is in the early stages of dementia.

In the 1970s and 1980s he was head of the military's efforts to "cure" soldiers of their homosexuality with, among others, shock treatment, earning him the nickname "Dr Shock".

Levin was found guilty of sexually harassing three of his male patients which the Canadian government referred to him for treatment. More than 20 of his patients came forward and made the claims.

At the time of his arrest, in 2010, he was professor in clinical psychiatry at the University of Calgary.

He left South Africa for Canada in 1995 after the Truth and Reconciliation Commission heard what happened in ward 22 of 1 Military Hospital.

At least one soldier committed suicide as a result of the "treatment" he received there.
