Johannesburg - The arrests of 18 people in a dog fighting syndicate on the East Rand are just the tip of the iceberg, says the SPCA.

The organisation announced on Monday that people were found while a dog fight was in progress at a house in Tsakane on the East Rand.

About 14 dogs were rescued but some of them were so badly injured they had to be euthanized, the Times reported.

The raid was the biggest of its kind in 18 years but the SPCA said unfortunately dog fighting was almost impossible to stop with those involved acting as part of a “secret underground network”.

All those arrested are between the ages of 22 and 48. Five people are already out on bail, Eyewitness News reported.

The organisation believes that more arrests will follow.
