Johannesburg - The National Council of SPCAs would on Tuesday not confirm reports that it intended investigating Thandi Modise's brother's farm following allegations of animal neglect.

"I cannot confirm that. There is no one in our farm animal unit at the moment," NSPCA spokesperson Christine Kuch said.

Beeld reported that the National Council of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (NSPCA) had obtained a warrant to enter the farm outside Vryburg, North West, on Monday.

There was apparently not enough food for all the animals and some had allegedly died.

Modise's brother, who did not want to give his first name to Beeld, reportedly told the newspaper he was only aware of two pigs that had died on his farm, one due to bile and the other after a dog bit it.

Neglect

On 6 July, the Sunday Independent reported that pigs were found starving and eating one another on the farm Modderfontein, near Potchefstroom, owned by Thandi Modise, who is National Council of Provinces chairperson.

Police and SPCA officials found dead and dying animals, including pigs, sheep, geese, goats and ducks. Many had to be put down.

It appeared the animals had been without water and food for around two weeks. There were no farmworkers on the property, no electricity, and the water pumps were broken.

The SPCA has said it would lay criminal charges against those responsible for the neglect.
