Cape Town - The communications director of internet giant InterActive, who was fired over a racist tweet over Aids, Justine Sacco, says she's ashamed over her insensitivity to the millions of people living with the virus.

According to Huffingpost a tweet sent from her account, said: "Going to Africa. Hope I don't get AIDS. Just kidding. I'm white!"

The furore about the tweet apparently broke out while she was in mid-flight between London and South Africa, and with no internet access.

Sacco was quoted by ABC on Sunday as saying it unfortunately is terribly easy to be cavalier about an epidemic that one has never witnessed first hand.

She apologised over her "needless and careless tweet" over a crisis which, she added, did not discriminate by race, gender or sexual orientation, but which terrifies all uniformly.

Sacco was born in South Africa.
