Dear subscribers, suppliers, newsmakers and others who may be interested:

In a week, at midnight on Tuesday, 31 March, Sapa will implement the board of directors' decision to shut down all editorial operations, permanently.

This will mark the end of a remarkable journey for this wire service through South Africa's history, during which millions upon millions of news items have been issued through Sapa since its first news report on 1 July 1938.

That was when Sapa was founded by member newspaper groups as an independent, non-government and non-profit news content co-operative, to supply them with news and to operate at all times in the public interest in terms of factual, fast, reliable and neutral information.

This then is an open invitation to Sapa's subscribers, suppliers, newsmakers, former staffers and others, including our critics - who may be interested in joining the editorial crew and support staff in marking the last few hours of operation.

Sapa's Johannesburg newsroom will be open to visitors from 18:00 to midnight next Tuesday.

We will have a couple of work stations available, especially for guests who may wish to type in a couple of paragraphs in memory of their links to Sapa over the years.

The objective will be to incorporate as many as possible of these messages in Sapa's last story, to be issued on the wires at midnight.

For those who may not be able to visit Sapa's newsroom directly, but would like to contribute a message, we have created the following dedicated e-mail address: lastwords@sapa.org.za.

Please limit the message to no more than two paragraphs.

To enable us to get an idea of likely numbers, please RSVP to maria@sapa.org.za or call reception at 011 782 1600.

Thank you,

Editor and staff of Sapa
