Sars, Hawks raid tycoon's home

2011-06-01 11:06

Durban - The SA Revenue Services and the Hawks raided the home of controversial Durban tycoon Sbu Mpisane on Wednesday morning.

"I can confirm that our guys are there. We are carrying out search and seizure," said Sars spokesperson Adrian Lackay.

He said the court had granted an order for the operation as part of an "ongoing investigation".

Lackay refused to divulge further information, saying that details would follow once charges had been formalised.

Mpisane, a former Durban metro police officer, came under scrutiny when it emerged he and his wife Shawn were super-rich with a fleet of expensive cars including a Rolls Royce Phantom and Lamborghinis.

He was still a police officer when the story broke.

In 2009, it was reported that the couple had received R219m from the eThekwini municipality to build low-income houses on 4 500 sites in Umlazi.

However, the National Home Builders' Registration Council found defects in more than 1 000 of 3 000 houses built by Zikhulise Cleaning and Transport, owned by the Mpisanes.

Of the defects, 30% were serious and would require major renovations.

The Mpisanes are known for their lavish parties, which are attended by politicians and celebrities.

  • matubeng - 2011-06-01 11:17

Jonnna, Joooo!!!!! This is South Africa, a cleaning company building given a state tender to build more than 3000 houses. Who awarded the tender, who were part of the tender committee, we want to know them all.

      levit8 - 2011-06-01 11:33

I heard his wife's mother was a big hitter in the ANC (Florence Mkhize), that's why the tenders started rolling in. She passed on, but not before she did some dodgy deals with her daughter. Hell, Florence even has a Durban municipal building named after her.

      Johnny - 2011-06-01 12:00

right on dude, and then it gets awarded to a cleaning and transport business, go figure. fancy the idea of the lavish parties with politicians and all, doesn't leave much for the imagination on how the tender was awarded

      Mad Hatter - 2011-06-01 12:16

Lets do the math : R219m on 4500 sites but only 3000 homes built , therefore if every cent was spent to ready these homes then each one cost R73000 to get built. With the average RDP home costing a conservative R50k to get built , thats a wopping R23000 profit take per house and 31.5% of the value of the home on the tender. So from the R219m contract value , R69m was a staight profit take and R150m was spent on building the houses. The construction industry average profit margin as around 5% , so R219m times 5 % = R11m leaving R208m to get the job done , it would have at an average cost of 50K a house produced 4160 houses , 1160 more than the 3000 construced of which 30% have serious faults. Thats ladies and gents is how you afford a lambos , rolls and a gaint mansion , not through the evil capitistic profit taking arch enemy of the poor but through public spending govt sponsored social works programs.

      Bongza.GP - 2011-06-01 13:35

11 MILLION RAND PROFIT! Now that is more money than what a former Durban metro police officer could do with. GIVE IT TO THE POOR!

      ir8m8 - 2011-06-02 14:09

      @levit8, lifetime achievement award????

  • Louis Cipher - 2011-06-01 11:18

This may not be the best solution for a united SA, but please can we divide the country into DA and the rest. Logistically and more importantly realistically this will not come into fruition, but think about it.... DA supporters can move and set up shop, businesses etc in one part of the country which will have its own laws and government. Without the hardworking taxpayers money and obvious corruption, the REST (other part) be a complete mess in about..mmm...3 years. DA owned section can then buy over, take control and kick the rest out to the open sea. If only I could rule a country...

      Lionel - 2011-06-01 11:33

      msendi - 2011-06-01 13:08

Black or white, corruption affects all of us. Not all of us will afford emigrating to Australia and the dream of DA state will never be achieved. We must accept that fact that the majority still vote ANC because they believe it led them to the promise land. Sometimes democracy sucks… is it??? wink!!!

      Concerned - 2011-06-01 13:15

Spot on Lionel, Louis is a bad thinking space!!!!!! Scary man, he needs help.

      schmerz - 2011-06-01 13:17

@Hrh, by that logic the ANC should be running the Western Cape, now go crawl into a hole and take your grammar along. That 9% minority is carrying the country, that 9% minority is stronger than the majority.

      Greybeard - 2011-06-01 13:21

@ Hrh - Basic Maths. Total white population of SA = 9% DA share of National Ballot = 24% By simple subtraction 24 - 9 = 15 Therefore, assuming the DA got the ENTIRE white vote (9%) which is extremely unlikely, the percentage of non-white voters is almost DOUBLE the white vote. Any political party MUST represent the views of their electorate (apparently excluding the ANC) or face extinction. As we have already proved that the DA's support is nearly 2:1 Non-white/white, is it realistic to say that the DA is a white or white-controlled party? THUS:- If you truly desire change, transformation and equality for all, Vote for the party that DOES NOT base it's support on any one racial, Ideological or religious grouping. Can you guess who that is?

      Hrh - 2011-06-01 15:48

@Greybeard, wot u talking abt "..one racial, ideological or religious grouping"?...White ppl started wit that sh*t. If the fore-fathers intergrated all the masses wen the Union of SA was formed, I dnt think we wud be in this position. We hav no 1 to blame for this mess happening bt ourselves. So in the words of P.W Botha "Adapt or die"! Besyds, no 1 is stopping the likes of Louis from emigrating to Ass-stalia! Cant blame black ppl for acting this way. Our forefathers deprived them of wot was n wot is truely theirs. This is Africa!! @Schmerz, The DA runs the WC only because as Jimmy Manyi put it:.."...there is an over concentration of coloureds in the WC..." besyds, its funni how ppl like u n sundry r running around screaming corruption this, corruption that. like the previous government wher a bunch of saints!...I think I might join you in that hole.

      Louis Cipher - 2011-06-01 16:14

@Hrh. Actually I am a 39 year old indian male. Born in the Cape in the space Verwoerd gave us, Rylands. He did send Caspirs and Buffels to visit us, handing out rubber bullets like sweets. Nice guys. I am an atheist. My heroes are Ricky Gervais, Chris Rock, Louis CK. Why? Cos they say what they think. I enjoy long walks on the beach, but not during the day as I have a year-round tan. Anything else you would like to know? As I said in my first post. It will never happen, but its nice to dream of a SA where we all live together and play nicely. At the moment, though, DA is doing the best job. Are they squeaky clean. No. They are politicians. HOWEVER, whenever I visit family in CT, I do not want to actually come back to Joburg, mainly because CT is so clean and pretty. That is a fact. So if I could have Joburg business with CT beauty...why can't I dream? If I am sick in my head, then so be it...

      ir8m8 - 2011-06-02 14:11

@greybeard, you are making an assumption based on the same voter % turnout accross all race groups which again was very unlikely.

      moiraine - 2011-06-02 15:58

I want to know who he is scared of. He has 3 security guards with AK47s patrolling up and down outside his house. The other day my friend turned down their road in error, so she tried to turn around in his driveway. The security guard came over, stuck the mgun in the window and told her she is not allowed to turn in his driveway!

My point is that surely our police/jutice system seems to be doing something. waaaay back in the past these sort of sorties were never heard of, if you catch my drift. clearly certain gorvenment organs are trying people so let us applaude those that do. ke lame leo.

      Mike or Mpho - 2011-06-01 11:43

Agreed, but past expeiences tell us differently over and over again. Lets see, he will be suspended with full pay for 2 years (at least), than he will be terminally ill and pardoned from serving his time when (and if) he is found guilty. Sound familiar? While all this happens, extra 0's will accumulate in his wife's, girlfriend's, granny's account.

It is criminal in the highest sense of the word. Disgusting. And there are probably thousands of other similar cases in SA of which we will never know or hear. And nothing will be done about it. Because these kinds of people are so connected with politicians and the ANC that it will just be covered up. I just hope that the law will run its course and that justice will be served.

This is bloody windrow dressing on Sars' part. Why isnt Malema's name on that list of blacklisted contractors??? I have some incide knowledge regarding Sars. They go after people who owe R2000 with letters of demand and summonses and the works but they protect other people. I know of a case where a company owner is friends with someone from Sars head office. When that person got a call from a collections agent, the idiot took the agents number and name and got his/her contact from Head office to call the agent. The agent got sworn by the manager for phoning "his" client.
