Johannesburg - The SA Student Congress (Sasco) on Wednesday demanded an urgent renaming of the Mangosuthu University of Technology, labelling IFP president Mangosuthu Buthelezi president "an apartheid regime stooge.
"Gatsha (Mangosuthu) Buthelezi is nothing else but a former stooge of the apartheid regime.... Students can't be misled into thinking that (he) is a hero who deserves to be honoured by naming the university after him," the student body said at a media briefing.
Sasco also demanded the removal of the Cecil John Rhodes statue at the University of Cape Town, saying it was against all that South Africa stood for.
The student organisation said it supported the importance of renaming national symbols and buildings linked with colonialism and apartheid - as part of creating a "caring, progressive, transformative and prosperous South Africa".
