Johannesburg - The SA Students' Congress has expressed anger about an alleged racist attack on a black student at the University of Free State.

"We refuse to accept that 20 years after democracy, African students are still called using the Kaffir word. We however, feel vindicated by the events as we have long called for the dissolution of the University of Free State for being a racist institution,” said spokesperson Luzuko Buku on Tuesday.

"We have long said the university led by Professor Jonathan Jansen has no intention to protect working class black students and this was demonstrated by how university security watched on as Dumane Gwebu was brutally attacked by two white racists."

On Thursday, two students accused of assaulting Gwebu appeared in the Bloemfontein Magistrate's Court.

Cobus Muller and Charl Blom were driving in a bakkie on the university's Bloemfontein campus on last Monday night and allegedly ran over Gwebu.

Later, the two allegedly confronted him and assaulted him.

Buku accused Jansen of covering up racism incidents at the university.

"What Jansen has done since his arrival in the university of Free State is not to transform the university from its notorious racist conditions on black students but he has been working very hard to protect and cover up racism by sweeping such cases under the carpet," said Buku.

The university has said the students, if found guilty in the criminal and institutional investigations, would not be allowed to study at the university.

The case returns to court on 9 March.
