School to hold memorial for bus victims

2011-08-25 10:52
Cape Town - A memorial will be held at a school in Knysna on Thursday morning for 14 children who died when their bus plunged into a river.

The memorial will be held at about 10:00.

The 14 were some of the 58 children on board a 33-seater bus on its way to Rheenendal Primary School. The bus driver also died in the tragedy.

The other 44 child occupants of the bus were taken to hospital, police spokesperson Captain Malcolm Potje told News24.

Most only sustained mild injuries but some were held overnight for observation.

Potje said that the education department and NGOs had sent counsellors to the school to help teachers, pupils and parents.
