Johannesburg - A school girl was gang raped at her school in Johannesburg by a group of boys who filmed the assault, the Gauteng education department said on Friday

Department spokesperson Charles Phahlane said preliminary investigations suggested two girls were given a date-rape drug on Thursday. One of the girls was gang raped by a group of boys while being filmed on their cellphones.

He said the age of the girl was not certain at this stage, but what was clear was that rape happened on the school grounds during school hours.

"At this stage we do not wish to go into further details as the police are still investigating the incident and we are conscious of the importance of not prejudicing the police case."

He said the girl opened a case with police and had received medical attention and trauma counselling.

"The department is working closely with the SAPS to ensure that this case receives priority attention and the alleged perpetrators are arrested and charged."

Phahlane said the department would also offer support to the victims, the school management and the school community.

"We urge all... to co-operate with the police and to show maximum support for those affected by this horrific incident," Phahlane said.
