Cape Town - A search continued on Thursday for a teenager presumed drowned at the Silverstream beach resort near Atlantis, Western Cape police said.

"Divers are searching along the coast, but there is no sign of a body yet," Lieutenant Colonel Andre Traut said.

The 18-year-old youth disappeared on Wednesday after entering the water, despite rough conditions.

National Sea Rescue Institute spokesperson Craig Lambinon said lifeguards had closed the beach for swimming due to rough seas and strong rip currents.

The teenager apparently waded into the ocean and was last seen being swept against rocks and disappearing under water.

He was from Darling, a small town about 75km north of Cape Town.

This is so unnecessary. Why go and swim in rough sea conditions after the beach has been closed. Hope they recover the body so that his family may get some closure. My thoughts and prayers are with them

I seem to recall a warning being posted about rough Cape seas, this seems to be nature thinning the gene pool.
