Johannesburg - The search for a female paramedic whose ambulance veered off a bridge into a river in Montagu resumed on Wednesday, Western Cape emergency services said.

"At 08:00 this morning, search teams located the ambulance about 200m from the bridge. The ambulance was submerged," spokesperson Keri Davids said.

Rescue teams and divers at the scene were trying to establish if the paramedic was inside the ambulance.

Davids said the rescue team was clearing large amounts of mud from the vehicle to try and find her.

"If not, they will have to search the entire river."

The woman had been driving from Montagu to Ashton at 05:30 on Tuesday when she left the Cogmanskloof bridge and landed in fast-flowing, murky water.

She then alerted the communications centre in Worcester and 14 emergency and rescue workers were sent to the scene. The area was also searched from the air.
