Cape Town - The search for a Muizenberg man continued in a scaled-down format around Table Mountain on Monday, marking the fifth day of searching since he disappeared while out on a hike.

“We have yet to come up with anything additional so we are actually holding another meeting this on Monday evening and re-looking at the search aspect again,” search co-ordinator Brent Jennings told News24.

Taro Spies, 25, left his home on Tuesday.

His car was found on Tafelberg Road by workers on Wednesday morning. It is believed that Spies, an active and fit person, had parked his car and gone hiking.

His parents reported his disappearance to police and have been assisting with the search, along with other family members and friends.

Jennings, who is vice chairperson of the Mountain Club of South Africa, said it was one of the largest searches they had done in terms of resources, the length of time and number of people involved.

He said they were working out which areas had not yet been covered but also had to keep an eye on weather conditions.

“If weather conditions are not conducive to efficient searching then we have to suspend the search," said Jennings.

The search team would be reviewing all possible scenarios.

He said the SA Police Service’s K9 dog unit had been deployed every day and other canine units were also assisting searchers.

Eight search and rescue teams were deployed on Saturday and more than 40 people resumed the search on Sunday.

They had scoured various parts of Devil’s Peak, the Twelve Apostles, Orange Kloof in Hout Bay and the lower slopes of Vredehoek.

Spies is over 2m tall, thin, has brown eyes, long dark hair and wears spectacles.
