Port Elizabeth - The search for a single-seater aircraft that went missing in the Eastern Cape continued on Friday, police said.

"Several calls from members of the community on possible sightings of the plane have been received. We have explored and investigated each of these, with no positive results thus far," Captain Mali Govender said.

The search for the aircraft continued at first light over areas including Paterson, Addo, Uitenhage, Colchester, and Kirkwood.

On Wednesday, one of three light aircraft, flying from Port Alfred to Port Elizabeth, failed to land as expected.

The pilots had picked up cloud and mist around 20km from Alexandria, and each pilot took a different route to avoid the poor visibility. Mali said the search effort had ground and air support.

She said people should not be alarmed by low-flying helicopters and planes, as these were part of the search operation, co-ordinated by the police's disaster manager in the province, Captain John Fobian.
