Durban- There was still no sign on Friday night of a 58-year-old woman reported to have mysteriously gone missing from a yacht six nautical miles off-shore of the Tugela River mouth in KwaZulu-Natal.

Search and rescue operations were abandoned as it got dark. The team would resume their mission on Saturday morning at 06:00, said National Sea Rescue Institute spokesperson Craig Lambinon.

The woman, originally from Johannesburg, had been travelling with her husband. The couple had sailed from Durban on Thursday and were heading for Madagascar.

"The skipper raised the alarm, reporting he had been asleep and when he awoke his wife was missing off their yacht," Lambinon said in a statement.

Sea rescue crafts, helicopters and swimmers had been deployed to assist in the search for the missing woman.

The yacht that the couple had been travelling in had since been anchored and the woman's husband, who is originally from the United Kingdom, would again join the search party on Saturday morning, Lambinon said.
