Johannesburg - An identikit of a toddler found dead under a bridge in Diepsloot, north of Johannesburg, has been compiled to try and find her parents, police said on Wednesday.

"At the moment we cannot confirm the identification of the girl because she had bite wounds on her face," deputy provincial commissioner Major General Tebello Mosikili told reporters in Midrand.

The girl, estimated to be aged between three and four, was found under a bridge in Mnandi by a passerby on Saturday evening.

A facial identification kit was done to try and find out who she might be and who her parents were. Several people had come forward to try to identify the body.

"The first family came from Roodepoort. They reported a missing child of between two and three years."

They could not positively identify her as theirs. The missing child's mother was not with the family at the time. She was called from Limpopo on Tuesday to come and see if the girl was hers.

"At the moment we cannot yet confirm that she knows the body because she became so emotional that she could not carry on with the identification."

DNA samples were taken from the mother. Mosikili said the case had been prioritised and they were waiting for results.

A post mortem was conducted on Tuesday and results showed that the girl was not strangled and there were no signs of any sexual assault or other physical body injuries.

Mosikili said the possibility of drowning could not be ruled out.
