Johannesburg - A security guard was killed and four others injured in a cash heist on the N3 near Leondale on Friday morning, East Rand police said.
A gang of ten robbers used two cars and a bakkie to force an SBV transit van off the road at 08:30, said superintendent Andy Pieke.
The van overturned and the robbers opened fire with AK47 and R5 rifles. One of the guards was shot in the head and died on the scene.
The robbers then used an axe to force open the van and remove the cash.
The gang escaped in a Nissan bakkie and a white BMW, leaving another white BMW - stolen in Edenvale last month - at the scene.
The other BMW was recovered later.
Four other security guards were in hospital with injuries, but it was not known whether they had been shot or injured in the collision.
