Selebi 'an arrogant liar'

2010-04-30 14:18
Johannesburg - Jackie Selebi was an "arrogant liar" who made ridiculous comments in court, destroying his credibility, prosecutor Gerrie Nel told the South Gauteng High Court on Friday.

He was cross-examining Selebi on his failure to produce the receipts he and his wife, Anne, used to compile a list of their household expenses.

Selebi brought the list to court on Wednesday. The next day, instead of bringing the till slips to court, he produced credit card statements.

He then agreed to bring the receipts to court on Friday, but when asked to produce them, he told court he had got home to find that his wife, who was not in court on Thursday, had "discarded the slips".

"My wife discarded them after we found better evidence," he said.

Slips 'shredded'

Asked why his wife would destroy "the evidence" after keeping the slips in their Pretoria home for six years, Selebi reiterated that it was "because she found better evidence".

Finding out about the discarded receipts had upset him, he said.

When Nel asked him if his wife showed him the discarded slips, Selebi answered: "No, she shredded them."

"Mr Selebi, this is becoming more and more ridiculous. You know what this shows? That you are arrogant and that you lie," said Nel.
