Selebi 'arrogant, disrespectful'

2010-06-07 11:45
Johannesburg - Former police commissioner Jackie Selebi was an "arrogant and disrespectful person" with no respect for the truth, prosecutor Gerrie Nel told the South Gauteng High Court in Johannesburg on Monday.

"It was, in our view, appalling to hear that the accused had personally consulted with a State witness, before the State had closed its case and made the witness available to the defence, and that during his cross-examination he personally consulted with a potential defence witness on the merits of the matter.

"The accused, without input from his legal team, quoted from files that he brought along during cross-examination. All of this is indicative of an arrogant and disrespectful person who was over-impressed with his own importance and who wouldn't crawl to no one," Nel said.

He was presenting his closing arguments in a corruption trial that has been running since October 2009.

Selebi has pleaded not guilty to charges of corruption and defeating the ends of justice, related to at least R1.2m in allegedly dubious payments made to him.
