Selebi granted leave to appeal

Johannesburg - Former national police commissioner Jackie Selebi was on Monday granted leave to appeal his 15-year jail sentence.

Judge Meyer Joffe said in the South Gauteng High Court he may only appeal the question of whether he received payments from convicted drug trafficker Glenn Agliotti.

His bail was extended.

Selebi's bid would be heard by the Supreme Court of Appeal.

Selebi's attorney Wynanda Coetzee told Sapa ahead of the application they had handed information to National Directorate of Public Prosecutions head Menzi Simelane for further investigation, following Selebi's statement on Friday that his prosecution had been improper.

Judge Joffe found him guilty of receiving money from Agliotti and sentenced him to jail in July this year.

Selebi has claimed State prosecutor Gerrie Nel was out to get him because of his involvement in shutting down the Scorpions corruption busting unit.
