Selebi may be charged next week

Johannesburg - National Police Commissioner Jackie Selebi could be charged as early as next week "should the National Prosecuting Authority have its way", the Mail & Guardian reported on Friday.
The paper said this came after the review panel set up by the NPA's acting national director Mokotedi Mpshe found that Selebi had a case to answer.
"The exact timing envisaged by Mpshe is unclear, although indications are that Selebi may be charged next week," the newspaper said.
A key element fell into place on Wednesday when Kebble murder-accused Glenn Agliotti - Selebi's friend - reached a plea agreement with the NPA.
"The leniency of the sentence and the plea agreement itself confirm that Agliotti is helping the Scorpions," the newspaper said.
NPA's spokesperson Tlali Tlali said he was not aware of the M&G report but a decision regarding the matter was yet to be taken.
Mpshe appointed the panel to advise him on the decision taken by the suspended NPA head Vusi Pikoli to charge Selebi for his alleged involvement in underworld dealings.
The panel submitted its report to Mpshe last week on Thursday.
Selebi's spokesperson Sally de Beer would not comment, other than saying "the matter is in the hands of the NPA".
