Johannesburg - The Gauteng health department on Tuesday suspended a senior official following allegations of misconduct.

Risk management and internal control chief director Abey Marokoane was suspended after police notified the department of an investigation into alleged misconduct, spokesperson Prince Hamnca said in a statement.

"We have decided to suspend Mr Marokoane, while we conduct a thorough internal investigation," Gauteng Health MEC Qedani Mahlangu said in the statement.

"We will fully co-operate with the police in their investigation as the charges are serious."

Marokoane was arrested on 27 November and appeared in the Specialised Commercial Crimes Court in Pretoria the next day.

He is currently out on bail.
