Cape Town - A seasoned senior officer has been appointed to oversee policing at three stations in Khayelitsha, Cape Town, Western Cape police said on Wednesday.

Major General Johan Brand, who headed the Mitchells Plain Station, was promoted to Khayelitsha cluster commander, acting provincial chief Hendrik Burger said in a statement.

"Major General Brand has 29 years' experience in the SA Police Service, the bulk of which he spent in the detective service," Burger said.

"Forty-six years old, Brand is a seasoned investigator who also worked in the child protection unit and policed in areas such as Soweto, Athlone and Mitchells Plain."

Brand, who holds a master's degree in public management, would also be responsible for policing at stations in the Helderberg area.

Policing in Khayelitsha is currently under the spotlight after Western Cape Premier Helen Zille set up a commission of inquiry to probe the alleged inefficiency of officers at the three stations.

The commission is compiling its report after public hearings ended last week.

Brand would prioritise "community mobilisation and integrated policing".

Another five senior officers were appointed to head "strategic policing stations" in the Western Cape.

Former Langa police station commander, Brigadier Vuyisile Ncata now heads the Paarl police station.

Brigadier Lavona Januari would go from Lansdowne to Oudtshoorn in another sideways move.

Former Hermanus cluster commander Brigadier Phumzile Cetyana would join Januari in Oudtshoorn as cluster commander.

Brigadier Lillian van Wyk was appointed provincial head for personnel management.

Brigadier Vuyani Mdimbaza would take over as station commander at Worcester, after serving as head of the Phillipi-East police station.
