Johannesburg - A senior police officer was wounded after he was attacked by two armed men at his house in Johannesburg south, police spokesperson Lieutenant General Solomon Makgale said on Friday.

"At approximately 21:00 last night, Thursday, Major General Daniel Mthombeni surprised two armed intruders minutes after arriving home," he said in a statement.

"After being confronted by the two armed men, a shoot-out ensued... Mthombeni sustained a gunshot wound to the shoulder after being shot at several times by the suspects, who managed to flee."

Makgale said two cellphones were stolen and that it was possible that one or both the intruders were wounded.

The police call on all medical facilities to be on the lookout for any person seeking medical assistance for a bullet wound, he said.

Mthombeni is the cluster commander of Pretoria central.

National police commissioner Riah Phiyega condemned the shooting and congratulated Mthombeni on "defending himself against what could have been a fatal attack".

"The SAPS family is relieved that Major General Mthombeni put his police training to good use and that we have not lost yet another good, dedicated public servant," said Phiyega.

Makgale said the shoot-out was being investigated by a special task team lead by divisional commissioner of detectives Lieutenant General Vineshkumar Moonoo.
