Bloemfontein – A man who raped a number of children in 2013 was on Wednesday given two life sentences in the Botshabelo Magistrate's Court, Free State police said.

According to police, Neo Setlai, 21, found a 5-year-old playing with friends on May 9, 2013. He took her away with him, promising to buy her chips, Constable Maselela Langa said.

"The man took the child to a nearby mountain in Botshabelo and raped her. Again, on 15 May 2013, the man took two girls aged 5 years old while playing and promised to buy them chips," Langa said.

He then allegedly took them to a mountain in Botshabelo and raped one girl. The other girl managed to flee.

Langa said, due to insufficient information about the suspect, both the case dockets had been closed as undetected.

However, in August 2013, Setlai took a boy and a girl - both 5 years old - to the same mountain in Botshabelo and forced them to have sex.

"The boy managed to flee and informed his family," he said.

"The following day, the community went out to look for the suspect and found him with a used condom after the boy had given the description of the suspect. The police took the suspect’s used condom for DNA tests and the results were positive.

Setlai was sentenced to 15 years imprisonment for rape.
