Serial killer gets 14 life sentences

2011-10-13 15:45

Johannesburg - Serial killer, rapist and robber Sello Alfred Phalane was given 14 life sentences by the Middelburg High Court on Thursday, Limpopo police said.

The 52-year-old was found guilty on five counts of murder, five counts of rape and four counts of robbery, Lieutenant Colonel Mohale Ramatseba said.

"The sentences will run concurrently."

Acting Limpopo commissioner, Major General Benny Ntlemeza, welcomed the ruling.

"The sentence will serve as a deterrent to would-be killers, rapists and robbers."

Phalane raped, robbed and killed five women between 2008 and 2009 in the Dennilton area.

His first victim, Eva Lekalakala, 41, was killed in June 2008. Her remains were found at Spitpunt, in Dennilton. She was identified through DNA tests.

Josephine Manamela, 38, was killed in August 2008 and her decomposed body found at Ga Maria village.

In February 2009, the naked body of an unknown woman, aged about 30, was found in the bushes at Driefontein, in Dennilton.

His fourth victim, Margaret Seretlo, 41, was found at Driefontein in July 2009, as was his fifth victim Elizabeth Kobe, 36.

Phalane was arrested while selling CDs at a taxi rank in Zebediela in September 2009.

      saabnut - 2011-10-13 15:55

Exactly. Why, oh why must we pay to keep this trash alive?

      Mags_24 - 2011-10-13 15:57

Why are the comments are active on this story and not on the serial rapists story.

      GypseyAnn - 2011-10-13 15:59

Bring back the death penalty! Why should hard-working tax payers feed this dreg of society. I actually learned from a colleague of mine from Zimbabwe that they make use of the death penalty in their country. Wonder what the rest of the world would have to say ... BRING BACK THE DEATH PENALTY - I SAY IT AGAIN FOR EMPHASIS!

      Shadoz - 2011-10-13 16:01

he will probely be let out soon.

      OZNOB - 2011-10-13 16:48

why not give him a dose of the good old ebola virus - that ought to get rid of him in 5 days or so

      Johan van Zyl - 2011-10-13 17:23

Kill the bastard... save the tax payer.

      digger.dighead - 2012-09-09 21:51

Why do they waste time trying them for all the crimes and not just one? All life sentences run concurrently, so in fact it's just one life sentence....will be out in about 15 hrs max.

  • bandit09 - 2011-10-13 15:54

14 live sentences nice but the problem is in this coutry he only does 1

      Almaki - 2011-10-13 16:10

And if the judge forgot the "no parole" he's out in 25 years.

      DW - 2011-10-13 16:52

Agreed Almaki. They should change the rule that no parole automatically applies to life sentence unless the judge SPECIFICALLY states otherwise. In this case he will be 77 by the time he is eligible. Hopefully he is "poked" by then

  • nyaro - 2011-10-13 15:57

  • boerekanon - 2011-10-13 15:58

Why not just bring the Death Penalty back! Now the taxpayer has to look after the this POC for the rest of his life!!

      Stun Gun - 2011-10-13 16:22

Death penalty in a country as corrupt as SA? Think about it.

      pragmatism - 2011-10-13 16:36

sorry, but death penalty is not an option in a democratic setting

      DW - 2011-10-13 16:55

pragmatism, why not? What has democracy got to do with the right to apply a fitting penalty to a criminal who did not care for the rights of his victims? Equality and freedom are the basic tenets of democracy. I dont think these have anything to do with the non rights of criminals who deserve nothing less than death

  • crocoros - 2011-10-13 16:09

No, no, no, why must we as tax payers pay for his board and lodge while he is in prison. He must be put down for the animal he is!

  • johannenchantelle.lombard - 2011-10-13 16:10

And now we have to pay to feed him!!!!!!

      boerekanon - 2011-10-13 16:24

How true..You can murder and rape and get out in few years for good behaviour..

  • Thingamebob - 2011-10-13 16:24

He should be out in two years, with high blood pressure or a member of the ANC. Talk to shabby shake and get tips

  • spiral - 2011-10-13 16:24

rope - noose - his neck! tax payers money saved for something worth spending it on!

  • Lida - 2011-10-13 16:27

iT IS NOT THAT WE HAVE TO PAY FOR THEM BUT THEY WILL GET FREE AGAIN AND DO IT ALL OVER AGAIN. iT HAS BEEN PROVEN IN THE PAST. CASTRATE THEM. WE DO NOT HAVE A FOLLOW UP SYSTEM FOR CRIMINALS. I.S.O. PAYING MONEY FOR OUR GOVERMENTS WHIMPS IT SHOULD BE USED IN THE CRIMINAL AND EDUCATIONAL SYSTEM. dO NOT KILL THE BOERS BUT KILL THE CORRUPTERS

  • SabaticalG - 2011-10-13 16:28

I still have to pay for this evil piece of shyt to eat and have a t.v and read books and do nothing for the rest of his life.... actaully i am paying for his retirement...

      Linda - 2011-10-13 16:45

You (we) are also paying for his free education - so in all likelihood he will spend his time in prison studying law so that when he gets out he knows all the legal technicalities to be able to avoid being jailed for his future crimes.

  • Nutzman - 2011-10-13 16:29

He could get a million life sentences, but as long as they run concurrently, then he's out after 1 life. In this country probably 20 years.... Unless you Derby Lewis?

  • SabaticalG - 2011-10-13 16:31

give him 50000000000 life sentences....... still makes no differance what he has done to those people. i hope they kill him in prison

  • sbu-ndebele - 2011-10-13 16:36

why cant they jus give this dog turd sulphuric acid to drink

  • Jimm636 - 2011-10-13 16:41

a deterent! yeah right. the only way a deterent works is if it something of such a magnitude, like getting your neck stretched. There wont be any point in rehabilitating this kind of offender as he will see out his days in prison, so why should my tax money go to a totally lost cause in the form of three meals a day, hot and cold running water, four walls and a roof, and bunch of friendly room mates? string this kind of criminal up and be done with it. that is a deterent. if this country held a referendum on the death penalty, the majority of the country would vote for it to be reinstated.

  • vanrooyend - 2011-10-13 16:50

The sentence will serve as a deterrent to would-be killers, rapists and robbers." Now how will this achieve the mentioned. Bring back death sentence. In 10 years time it might make a difference

  • Werner Lubbe - 2011-10-13 16:59

Hmm... five counts of murder, five counts of rape and four counts of robbery and still some people want this guy to live. Why? When he gets out, who's next? Don't give me that libiralist crap that everyone deserves a second chance. Sello Alfred Phalane clearly won't give you one. He'll rob you, rape you and then kill you! What should we do with him? Hang him on T.V.

  • christiaan cronje - 2011-10-13 17:08

"The sentence will serve as a deterrent to would-be killers, rapists and robbers." People it never does.... death sentence will. Sad but true.

  • d2eguy - 2011-10-13 17:09

hang the trash and save the tax payer thousands .

  • Ernie Meyer - 2011-10-13 18:55
