East London - Serial killer Bulelani Mabhayi, who pleaded guilty to 36 counts of murder, rape and robbery, has been sentenced to 25 life sentences.

The sentences will run concurrently, eNCA reported on Tuesday.

Mabhayi was dubbed one of the country's most notorious serial killers, and was known in the Eastern Cape as the panga man.

He reportedly terrorised residents of Tholeni for five years, breaking into homes at night before raping and murdering girls and women aged between 6 and 79.

Last week Mabhayi pleaded guilty to 20 charges of murder and 16 charges in the Eastern Cape High Court sitting in Butterworth.

He apologised to the community for his crimes. His defence submitted in mitigation of sentence that he was a dagga smoker and that there were prospects of him being rehabilitated, Sapa reported.
