Johannesburg - Four people were killed, including a child, and a fifth was critically injured in a head-on collision on the R716 near Sasolburg, paramedics said on Sunday.

A car veered into oncoming traffic and collided with another at high speed on Friday night.

"The force of the impact caused one of the vehicles to overturn and roll from the road, coming to rest in a field on its side," said Netcare 911 spokesperson Jeffrey Wicks.

Paramedics found the other vehicle had skidded to a halt near the initial point of impact. A woman passenger had been killed on impact, and her body was trapped in the wreckage.

The driver was in a critical condition. He was taken to hospital by ambulance for further treatment.

In the other vehicle, two men and a boy aged between eight and ten died as a result of their injuries, said Wicks.
