Johannesburg - Seven people were arrested following an armed robbery at an SA Social Security Agency (Sassa) paypoint situated inside a Shoprite store in Bishop Lavis on Sunday, Western Cape police said.

The men had fled the scene in a getaway vehicle, said Constable Lorencial Johnson.

"A chase ensued between the police and the suspects through different areas including Ravensmead, Parow and Goodwood," said Johnson.

Several shots were exchanged between the police and the robbers.

"The suspects abandoned the vehicle in Jan van Riebeek Drive, Parow," said Johnson.

Four of the seven arrested sustained injuries during the shootout and were hospitalised under police guard.

An eighth suspect was found dead in the getaway vehicle.

"Five firearms was recovered on the scene with an undisclosed amount of cash believed to be have taken from the store," said Johnson.

"Cases of armed robbery, attempted murder, inquest, malicious damage to property and possession of illegal firearms and ammunition were opened for investigation."

Police were investigating whether any more people were involved in the incident.

Those arrested will appear in court shortly.
