"The train had about 70 people on board and seven of them had minor injuries," said Gauteng Metrorail spokesperson, Lillian Mofokeng.

"We don't know how, or what happened."

The 12-coach train was coming in from Pretoria through Doornfontein and into Park Station near the Twist and Claim street bridge.

The injured were taken to Hillbrow Clinic for treatment and there will be an investigation into what caused the derailment.

The incident will cause delays of at least two hours on the line on routes to Germiston, Pretoria, Daveyton and Springs.

"The trains are moving. It's just that they are running very late," said Mofokeng.
