Johannesburg - Seven people were killed in separate accidents in the Free State since the start of the Easter weekend, police said on Friday.
Police spokesperson Motantsi Makhele said two people were killed on the N6 about 10km from Smithfield on Thursday night in a head-on collision involving two cars.
A 51-year-old man in a Corolla and a 56-year-old woman in a Renault died at the scene.
"The other passengers from both cars were taken to Smithfield hospital and were later transferred to Pelonomi Hospital in Bloemfontein," said Makhele.
Another two people were killed when a minibus they were travelling in overturned on the N3 while trying to overtake a van.
The Toyota Hi-Ace was about to overtake the van when it hit it from behind. The driver of the van lost control and the van overturned.
A 31-year-old man from Natalspruit and another 22-year-old man from Alberton, Johannesburg died on the scene.
Two other passengers in the van were taken to Mafube Hospital in serious but stable conditions. None of the people in the minibus were injured.
In the third accident a truck driver travelling from Standerton to Vrede lost control of his vehicle at a bridge about 16km from Vrede.
The driver of the truck and two passengers died. One other passenger was taken to Vrede Hospital where he was discharged after being treated for minor injuries.
Police would only release names of the deceased once their families had been notified.
