Several hurt as guards open fire

2012-02-01 10:05
Johannesburg - Several people were injured during a scuffle with security guards at a shop in Selby, Johannesburg, Gauteng police said on Wednesday.

Warrant Officer Lorraine van Emmerik said a man was hospitalised after being assaulted by security guards during a labour dispute.

At least two other workers were also injured by the guards but did not need to be hospitalised, said Van Emmerik.

Security guards were called in at the Discount Cash and Carry on Tuesday after a labour dispute with management turned violent.

"The management called the guards, who arrived on the premises and intervened by firing shots at the workers," she said.

No one was believed to be injured in the shooting but a fight broke out and some of the workers were assaulted by the guards.

Van Emmerik could not immediately confirm a report in the Sowetan that one person was shot in the head.

Nine of the security personnel were arrested and are expected to appear in the Johannesburg Magistrate's Court on Thursday on charges of assault, pointing of a firearm and the discharge of a firearm.
