Johannesburg - Patience was the watchword at Lebombo border post into Mozambique as technical problems caused significant delays on Friday.
"There are technical problems with the movement control system and we are sorting that out," said department of home affairs' head of immigration Jackie Mckay.
"We are putting in other measures," he said.
Thousands of people were heading for the east African country either to be home with family in time for Christmas or for holidays along the Indian Ocean coastline.
The border post processes the movement of hundreds of thousands of people and cargo loads over December.
