Pietermaritzburg - When Estelle Herbst purchased her new home in Boughton a year ago, she never imagined the stinking situation she would find herself in.

Herbst said the problem started a few months ago when raw sewage gushed down the embankment next to her Celtis Road home, flooding her yard.

“Sewage started pouring down the wall and next to my kitchen door. We have to constantly keep the kitchen door and windows closed because of the terrible stench,” said Herbst.

Apart from raw sewage, Herbst said she also found used tampons and toilet paper floating in the yard just outside her kitchen door.

Herbst is uncertain where the sewage leak is originating from, however, she says it is only her home that is affected.

“How do we live like this? We have reported this to the municipality and Health Department numerous times but no one assists us. We just get reference numbers,” she said.

Herbst said that since the sewage “waterfall”, her toddlers and domestic worker have been constantly ill.

“It is obviously due to all the filth and unhygienic things floating around that is causing all of us to become ill,” she said.

The Msunduzi Municipality, after months of calls and reference numbers, put a stop to the flow.

However, operation clean-up was left in the hands of Herbst.

“This cannot be cleaned by us with our bare hands. It is terrible and disgusting and even our animals are now sick,” Herbst said.

She added that with the hotter days, the yard is in an “even worse state” and the stench becomes stronger.

“It is horrible because some days there’s a slight rain which dampens everything then the hotter days which makes the place stink even more,” she said.

The municipality was not available for comment on the weekend.
