Sewerage spills into Hennops River

2012-02-22 19:06
Pretoria - Residents of Centurion have been warned to avoid using water from the Hennops River due to a sewerage leak, the City of Tshwane said on Wednesday.

Spokesperson Pieter de Necker said a 900mm sewerage pipe was damaged in Tuesday night's flooding, spilling its contents into the river.

"Midrand and Centurion experienced heavy flooding on Tuesday afternoon after a storm passed through the area," said de Necker.

"In the evening, a bridge was washed away and a sewerage pipe resting on the bridge broke into two as a result," said De Necker.

"Raw sewerage that was in the pipe spilled into the river. Our engineering teams are currently busy building a temporary structure to be placed over the river and to secure the sewerage pipe," he said.

Due to the pollution, De Necker said water from Hennops River should not be used either for human or animal consumption.

He said repairs and mopping up operations were underway.
