Durban - A convicted sex pest granted bail this week is still in jail until his bank releases his funds.

The former drama teacher, facing 11 fresh child sex charges, will be released from Westville prison on Friday after being granted R250 000 bail on Wednesday.

Lawyer Nerrisa Farrington said her client, who cannot be named until he formally pleads, was waiting for his bank to clear the funds.

“The matter is currently with Absa Bank’s legal department who are scrutinising the paperwork … He has the [bail] money."

They missed the Thursday 15:00 deadline, but she said she was sure he would be out on Friday.

Medication

Farrington said while her client had been treated well in prison, he had not accessed his medication.

“He suffers from depression and was rushed on several occasions to Westville Hospital. In his three months in custody he has only had one pair of clothes,” said Farrington.

She said he was an “orphan” without family, but would remain in his flat and appear at his local police station weekly on Monday, Wednesday and Saturday.

The case returns on 7 December where he is expected to plead, providing the police complete their investigation.

The man was convicted of sexual assault in 2003 and has taught at Hillcrest High School and Maritzburg College. His teaching contract at a Durban Boys’ High School has since been terminated.
