East London - An elderly Austrian tourist who was killed in a shark attack at a beach in Port St Johns fought to the very end of his life, witnesses told newspapers.

The 72-year-old man was attacked at Second Beach where he had gone as part of a tour group on Saturday. The man was swimming with his wife when the incident happened.

The man was waist-deep in the water when the shark bit him, lifeguard Siphosoxolo Njila told the Cape Argus and Cape Times.

Nijila said he saw the man being pushed into the air as the shark bit into the lower half of his body. He says the man then tried to hit the shark on the head but just as he did so the shark opened its jaws and bit off his arm.

Nijila and fellow lifeguard, Sizwe Dusubana, estimate that the man was alive for 20 minutes after the attack and tried to swim to shore, despite having lost an arm.

Another witness told Beeldthat the lower half of the man’s body was bitten off.

It is still uncertain what type of shark attacked the man but it is thought to be the Zambezi or bull shark.

Nijila and Dusubana are trained lifeguards but were not on duty because the municipality only pays them for their services during the festive season.

This is the eight shark attack at the beach in five years.
