Johannesburg - The South Gauteng High Court has ordered the ANC Youth League and its former spokesperson Floyd Shivambu to apologise to Saturday Star news editor Kashiefa Ajam within 14 days for remarks that she was a "drunkard", The Star reported on Friday.

The remark was made in 2010 after Ajam wrote an article which claimed there were links between the youth league and alcohol brands.

Shivambu accused the newspaper and Independent Newspapers [now Sekunjalo Independent] of deliberately publishing falsehoods to promote the use of alcohol.

According to the newspaper, Shivambu said in a statement on Google groups that Ajam, a practising Muslim, was a "drunkard".

The allegation was particularly offensive as Muslim teachings forbid the use of alcohol, the newspaper reported.

If Shivambu and the youth league did not apologise and retract the comment, they would have to pay Ajam and Independent Newspapers R175 000 each.

Shivambu said he was not aware of the default judgment order but "if that is the directive, I have no problem".

"I have no problem withdrawing some of the things I have said when I was with the ANCYL," he was quoted as saying.

"That was youthful exuberance. I am now involved in much more serious business with the EFF [Economic Freedom Fighters]."
