Cape Town - The National Prosecuting Authority in the Western Cape has noted an increase in the number of sexual violence cases involving pupils with special needs, it was reported on Monday.

The NPA’s Eric Ntabazalila told the Cape Times a care centre in Worcester had analysed trends in sexual abuse cases and found that many involved pupils who were mentally challenged. The cases involved abuse by adults but also by other pupils.

There had been a 50% increase in the number of rape and sexual assault cases reported between March 2013 and April this year, Ntabazalila said.

The provincial education department spokesperson Paddy Attwell said that their social workers were working with the NPA to train teachers in the Worcester area.

There have been several reports recently of child rape and sexual abuse cases in the province. Many involve children.

In one case, a 5-year-old Grade R girl was raped by three Grade 2 pupils at their school in Mitchells Plain, the Cape Argus stated.

In November last year, a 9-month-old baby was found to have been raped in Franschhoek, Sapa reported.
