Durban - A teacher at a KwaZulu-Natal school says she is
traumatised after witnessing the execution-style killing of a fellow teacher
who took 10 minutes to die.
Dedicated teacher Maureen Khuzwayo, 52, was shot three times
on Friday afternoon shortly after giving out report cards at the Zephania
Secondary School, reported the Daily News.
It was initially reported that Khuzwayo was shot by a
disgruntled parent, but it has since emerged that this was probably just a ruse
to gain entry to the school as that particular report card had been handed
over. There was speculation that the shooting had nothing to do with school
matters at all and came about as a result of “outside affairs”.
Sleepless nights
One colleague who witnessed the shooting said she was having
sleepless nights after watching Khuzwayo die.
“He pointed the gun at her and fired twice,” said another
teacher who wanted to remain anonymous.
“Khuzwayo fell to the ground and the man jumped over her and
walked away. We thought he was leaving but we were wrong. He turned around,
walked back and shot her in the head and walked away with the gun in his hand.”
The KwaMaphumulo community was terrified by the shooting and
colleagues have vowed not to return to the school unless safety measures are
introduced.
Khuzwayo was a mother of four and also headed up the
school’s commerce department. She was described as a dedicated teacher who
always went the extra mile.
A day before the shooting, the school had been burgled.
The education department visited the school after the shooting and offered counselling to
teachers and children.
