Durban - As a woman tried to pull her wounded sister away from the man who had been preparing to rape her, the rapist pulled his victim from her grasp.

He dragged the woman away and raped her, stabbing her in the chest and throttling her. She died from her injuries.

The horrific scene played out in the South Coast town of Margate on Tuesday night at the home of retired SA Revenue Service auditor Janetta Lorraine van der Walt, 60.

Van der Walt had been watching TV with her sister Koekie Stander, 69, when her barking dogs prompted her to investigate what was worrying them.

Her sister had warned her not to go outside.

Help

Her shocked nephew, Walter Green, told The Witness that Stander had then heard Van der Walt calling “Koekie, help my asseblief” [Koekie, help me please].

Stander looked outside and saw a man raping her sister. The man ran away when he realised that help was coming.

Van der Walt, who had been stabbed in the chest, managed to sit up and asked her to phone to summon help.

Stander began pulling on her sister’s arms to get her inside, when the man suddenly returned and began pulling Van der Walt’s legs. A distraught and frightened Stander lost her grip on her sister’s arms and slammed the door shut to call for help, before realising she had dropped the cellphone outside. Meanwhile, the rapist had ripped off his pants and was raping Van der Walt outside.

Green said that Van der Walt had screamed and the man had then throttled her as he continued raping her.

“Koekie stayed inside the house and phoned her son in Cape Town. That was the only number she could think of. He then called my sister in Durban, who called me in Margate,” said Green.

He said he got to the house five minutes after receiving the phone call. "Someone had called the police as they were there before me,” said Green.

He said Van der Walt was cold, lying on the ground in a pool of blood, with her panties ripped off when he arrived. Her house keys lay next to her body. He then opened up the house to check on his other aunt.

Green said Stander described the rapist as small-built and young. She said he smelt of alcohol.

Traumatised

“My aunt is extremely traumatised by the incident. She won’t be the same again.

“What kind of human being does this to two old women? And all he left with was a cellphone. What is this world coming to?” asked an angry Green. He said his dead aunt could barely walk due to hip problems.

Van der Walt, who was widowed four months ago, is survived by an adopted daughter. Her son died 23 years ago in a car accident.

Green said she had worked in Durban and was transferred to Springs, then Alberton, from where she retired to Margate.

He described her as a family-oriented person – "the family newspaper”, who loved needlework and tutoring school pupils.

“She was very friendly. She got along with everyone.”

Police spokesperson Captain Gerald Mfeka said Margate detectives were investigating a rape and murder docket.

"The victim was stabbed in the neck with a sharp object and died as a result,” he said.

Mfeka warned locals not to go outside if they heard strange noises. “Please contact the police or press your panic button. Do not go outside.”
