Bloemfontein - Shocking allegations of regular rape and abuse of residents at a Free State care centre have surfaced after a workshop there.

Police held an information session on sexual abuse at the centre after a man was raped by another resident at the centre, reported Volksblad.

Police heard that stronger (less disabled) residents were asked to help out with duties such as bathing those who were more severely disabled as there was a staff shortage.

The “stronger” residents were accused of raping the residents they were supposed to help care for.

After the session more incidences of rape were reported. Police were now investigating these.

The 30-year-old rape victim, who has Down’s syndrome, was so badly injured during the rape earlier this year that he required hospitalisation for three days.

His parents said the incident was not reported to police and he was not taken to a doctor after the alleged attack.

They only heard about the incident when other residents informed them.

The alleged rapist would not be prosecuted because he was mentally disabled and could not be held accountable.

He was no longer living at the centre.

The care centre’s head didn’t want to comment and said the incident was being investigated.
