Shootout at Bloem airport
Bloemfontein - A man was wounded by police on Saturday when they tried to arrest him for trespassing on the runway of the Bloemfontein Airport.
Police spokesperson Captain Rulene Kuhn said the man jumped over the outer fence of the airport and walked onto the runway.
"Members of the Protection Security Service went out to arrest the man for trespassing and took him to the offices on the airport premises."
She said while on their way to the offices, a struggle broke out between the police and the trespasser, during which pepper spray was used.
Kuhn said the man then took out a broken bottle neck and started to attack the police.
During this struggle, the man overpowered one of the police officials and took away their firearm.
Several shots were then fired between police and the trespasser.
The trespasser was wounded in his arm. Apparently no police were injured.
The man was then overpowered and the firearm taken away.
He was arrested and taken to hospital under police observation.
At this stage, police are investigating a case of trespassing, Kuhn said.
