Shop owner stabbed, teen arrested

2011-12-21 16:37
Johannesburg - An 18-year-old youth was arrested in Rietvallei, east of Johannesburg, after an Azaadville shop owner was stabbed multiple times, Gauteng police said on Wednesday.

A shop assistant was busy at the back of the shop on Tuesday and when he went back inside, he was surprised by an unknown man standing over his employer with a knife in his hand, Warrant Officer Solomon Sibiya said.

"His employee was on the floor, bleeding profusely as a result of multiple stab wounds to his hands and body. The employee screamed and the youth dropped the knife and fled the scene."

The shop owner was rushed to the hospital and is in a stable but critical condition.

Sibiya said the youth was a regular customer and could be identified.

"He was traced and finally arrested at Rietvallei, next to Azaadville, a few hours later," Sibiya said.

He will appear in court soon on charges of attempted robbery and attempted murder.
