Polokwane - A Limpopo dad who was shot by an armed robber in front of his two little girls shot back and killed his attacker.

Constable Deon Jardim, 31, a police detective, was about to take his 4-year-old and 2-year-old daughters to crèche on Monday when three men surrounded his unmarked police bakkie in the driveway of his house, reported Beeld.

“One of them pointed a revolver at me. He said ‘sjuut, sjuut’. I tried to turn so that the robbers don’t see my service pistol.”

But the man with the gun did see it and shot at him, missing his heart by only 2cm.

“The Lord put on his bulletproof,” said Jardim’s wife, Lizilla.

Shot back

Jardim pulled out his service pistol and shot back, with five of the shots hitting and wounding the attacker who later died in hospital.

His daughters started crying and his wife came running out of the house after she heard shots being fired.

Jardim collapsed next to the car and the other men ran off.

He was taken to hospital by a neighbour.

Jardim said from his hospital bed on Tuesday that it was a miracle he was alive.

A piece of the bullet was stuck in his breastbone. The tip of the bullet was in his right shoulder, resulting in him having no feeling in two fingers of his right hand. Doctors said it was too dangerous to try and remove it now.

Police were investigating the incident.
