Sick 'Sunday Rapist' postpones trial

2012-08-23 12:51

Johannesburg - The 'Sunday Rapist' trial was postponed in the High Court, sitting in the Palm Ridge Magistrate's Court, Alberton, on Thursday.

Judge Sita Kolbe postponed the matter to Monday morning as accused Johannes Jacobus Steyn was sick and to give the defence more time to prepare.

Steyn has pleaded not guilty to two counts of murder, 11 of rape, 10 of sexual assault, 10 of kidnapping, one of attempted sexual assault, and one of attempted kidnapping.

On Wednesday the State closed its case.

The State's last witness, trauma specialist Jean de Wilde, testified on medical examinations done on the girls who were sexually assaulted.

He said he found indications of vaginal penetration.

The State was still searching for a doctor meant to give evidence on the sexual assault of another victim.

Kolbe said if the doctor was found at any stage during the trial his testimony could be heard, if necessary.
