Johannesburg - Twelve children who were admitted to hospital overnight after falling ill at a school roadshow were expected to be discharged on Thursday, medical group Netcare said.

"Twelve children were admitted for observation overnight and are expected to be discharged later today... The majority of the children did not have to be hospitalised," spokesperson Mande Toubkin said.

Toubkin said Garden City Hospital, Mulbarton Hospital and the Union Hospital in Alberton had seen 74 children by 22:30 on Wednesday.

"The children apparently consumed a substance that was suspected of causing vomiting and diarrhoea, with some of the children apparently collapsing," she said.

The pupils from Mulbarton Primary School, south of Johannesburg, had attended a roadshow at their school on Wednesday afternoon, and consumed chocolate milk drinks.

Toubkin said the health department would determine whether the children had fallen ill because of contaminated food.
