Johannesburg - Former National Assembly speaker Max Sisulu has resigned from Parliament, the ANC has confirmed.

City Press reports that ANC caucus spokesperson Moloto Mothapo said in a text message Sisulu had resigned as of today.

“We are really grateful for the excellence with which he served the ANC and the people in this institution as well as the immense contribution he continues to make to SA,” Mothapo said in an SMS following a query.

Sisulu went back to being an ordinary MP after failing to get reappointed as speaker last week following his recent five-year term and after he had failed to secure a Cabinet position.

He is the third ANC MP to resign from Parliament.

Former tourism minister Marthinus van Schalkwyk resigned on Monday after failing to be reappointed to Cabinet, and Zizi Kodwa resigned on the same day to become full-time ANC spokesperson.
