Johannesburg - Six men have been arrested in Woodmead, north of Johannesburg, after five taxis were shot at, said Metro Police.

The taxis were attacked on Monday in Blue Hills, Midrand, said Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar.

No injuries or fatalities were reported.

The men belonged to a taxi association that is allegedly a rival of the taxis attacked, said Minnaar.

Traffic officials stopped and searched two vehicles in which the men were travelling along the R55.

"An illegal firearm and six rounds of ammunition were found in the one car," said Minnaar.

None of the men claimed responsibility for the gun, leading to all six being arrested.

It was not immediately clear whether the weapon was used in Monday's attack.

The six were expected to appear in the Randburg Magistrate's Court on Wednesday.
